THE BUG BOOK
A Guide to the Identification of Common Aquatic Benthic Macroinvertebrate Families of California and Western North America
by Cyndi Brinkhurst, Susan McCormick & Sandra Williamson
2009, second edition, 160 sheets, color photos, b/w line drawings. This remarkably well-illustrated book contains descriptions of 9 orders and 76 families of bottom dwelling aquatic insects. A page devoted to each family has explanatory color photographs and/or illustrations along with key taxonomic characteristics, biological information, California tolerance values, primary feeding groups, and taxa tips to help you separate each family from similar ones. There is also a chapter for 12 non-insect taxa with descriptions and images to aid identification. Tables listing the distribution of each family throughout the Western states, pages on biology and metamorphosis, and an updated glossary are included.
The 8-1/2 x 11″ separate sheets with color tab edges for each family are contained in a user-friendly 3-ring binder with room for your own notes and comments. A laminated sheet in the binder’s front pocket provides an Order summary on one side and a benthic macroinvertebrate organization chart on the other side.
