2018, 175 pages. It has been more than 44 years since Thomas Emmel and John Emmel’s The Butterflies of Southern California was published. The book covered 167 species and an additional 64 subspecies or segregates. Much more information has been added to our knowledge of the region since 1973.
This updated version covers the current information available for butterflies of the region. Five blues formerly treated as subspecies are now given species status. It includes input from books, articles, scientific papers, and personal communication from over 100 sources as well as published Season Summary information. Scientific names are updated in the Pelham Catalogue and other work cited in the text.
A total of 416 species, subspecies and segregates are covered in this publication – 222 species, 160 subspecies and segregates, and 34 other taxa. Species accounts cover names issues, scientific and common names, updated status, habitats, flight times, distribution by county and important new distributional records.
